Anhand der Stellung und des Zustandes der Zähne kann man das Alter und den Zustand des Pferdes und somit den Wert feststellen. Eben dies soll man bei einem “geschenkten Pferd” unterlassen.Based on the position and condition of the teeth, one can determine the age and condition of the horse and thus the value. Doing that one should refrain from with a “gifted horse”.

Das Sprichwort geht auf das römische Sprichwort: Noli equi dentes inspicere donati zurück, das unter anderem vom Kirchenvater Hieronymus (347 – 420 n. Chr.) in seinem Kommentar zum Epheserbrief zitiert wird.The saying goes back to the Roman saying: Noli equi dentes inspicere donati, which is quoted among others by the church father Hieronymus (347 - 420 AD) in his commentary on Ephesians.

  • Aber ich schaue nicht nach, wie viel sie gekostet hat, denn einem geschenkten Gaul schaut man nicht ins Maul.But I don’t check how much it cost, because you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
• Beispiel: Das Kind wünscht sich ein Fahrrad.Example: The child wants a bicycle.
